What is the difference between a slam and a breakdown
There is never any high-pitched screaming, clean vocals, hardcore-style shouting, or anything but sick, sewer-sludge gutturals. Please note that slam bands do not use pitch shifters to make their vocals lower, that is a goregrind thing. This Devourment shirt is like one small step up from the retarded scrawlings of a 14 year-old stoner doodling on the back of his remedial English textbook during detention- nothing remotely cool or fashionable about it, just a 1-color print of some shitty drawing.
The Devourment shirt above? Not so much. Would need to do more research to definitively make the call. Despised Icon is another interesting case. Please note that both the fan and the guy from Suiside Silence are wearing pink — a dead giveaway that we are NOT dealing with slam. This is what kind of groupies you can expect from playing in a slam band. Looks like they are standing on the side of some desolate road in Elizabeth, NJ- not quite as glamorous as having a sold-out House Of Blues in the background.
If you ever go to a deathcore show, expect something along these lines: the band playing in broad daylight to a huge crowd whose average age is probably around 8th grade.
They might as well be a mini-Bon Jovi. A deathcore band would never play a show like this, since people in deathcore bands want to be rockstars and there is nothing rockstar about this shit. People in slam bands just want to slam that sickness so they are pretty much down for whatever. Tremolo picking, screaming and skank beats? A fake metal genre that wants to fool people into thinking Brutal Death Metal is called "Slam Metal". Ignorant fools use the term "Slam Metal" to describe a wide variety of well established genres, for example: Goregrind, Brutal Death Metal and Deathgrind.
Absolute fucking garbage. It sounds like a band of rejects and a vocalist got together and started to suck each other off. A complete garbage genre of heavy metal and when you hear it you should have yourself cleansed by a priest. Slam metal killed my dog. Slam death metal. There is a difference, but there is a lot of overlap between the two sub-genres as you will likely see as you continue to explore.
I feel like slam tends to be simpler, with less tempo changes and riffs in each song. BDM tends to have quite complex song structure with a variety of tempo changes and tons of riffs. Slam death metal is basically a subdivision of brutal death metal in which a particular component of brutal death metal-- namely, slams-- are brought entirely to the forefront and made the primary ingredient of the riffing.
So whereas brutal death metal can and often does employ a wide variety of different riffing styles, and also tends to be quite technical, slam death metal often is much simpler, and focuses on chunky, grooving low-end riffs.
Slamming brutal death metal, I'm pretty sure, is just a dumb term some people use to refer to slam death metal. And a few examples of slam death metal include Devourment , Epicardiectomy , Cephalotripsy , Rest in Gore , and Coprocephalic.
