What is the difference between an infographic and an information visualization

The primary focus here is on effective presentation of information. An infographic can become a confusing mess if it covers too large a topic, offering facts that are seemingly unrelated to one another. Ideating for an infographic is more complex than choosing a topic for a data visualization.

Infographics need several relevant data sets, facts, or blurbs that relate to the same overall topic. Your visualizations might elaborate on gross revenue, opening weekend viewers, and merchandise sales. If you can find these details for only a few of the franchises in your piece, it will seem unbalanced and incomplete. Creating an infographic requires careful thought and planning. As a designer researcher I am interested in what practitioners know or assume about those things and how this then impacts on their design methods and decision making. Data is raw, like a spreadsheet. But in spreadsheets is difficult to quickly spot anomalies or hotspots since there are few Gestalt cues. Visualising it in a way that quickly lets you find anomalies or hotspots is called datavisualisation. When visualised, they are called infographics.

Newspapers like the Guardian have brilliant ones, often involving, arrows, different sized coloured blobs, etc. Because you have seen so much that you can start seeing meta-patterns.
