What is woodstock known for
It was organized by people who had originally just wanted to build a music studio in the upstate New York village. When word got out that a event was in the works, locals had fought to cancel it. What unfolded over the next three days from August , became legendary—as a music event and as a generational moment. I dig it all, the mud, the rain, the music, the hassles.
Crowds walk along roads choked with traffic on the way to Woodstock. While the village of Woodstock, New York had been home to a group of artistic, idealistic people since the early 20th century, many residents of the older generation considered the young "hippies" to be slackers and even, in some cases, dangerous. Over the years the village had passed ordinances that targeted behaviors like shirtlessness, public consumption of alcohol and loitering.
A last-minute scramble to prepare for the concerts meant that there was no time to build fences around the venue. They stopped selling tickets, word was out—and all bets were off.
Youth from around the country were on their way to Bethel. So organizers found a last-minute replacement in folk singer Richie Havens. Many performers demanded to be paid in cash before going on stage which contributed to the lack of financial resources available.
Jimi Hendrix performed at 9am on a Monday after the festival was intended to end because his contract included a clause that no performer could play after him.
Due to mass confusion and chaos surrounding the number of people, the original setlist was never followed. Many performers made appearances hours or days after they were expected to. Three people died during the festival.
Two people died from drug overdoses and one from being run over by the driver of a tractor who did not notice the man sleeping under a sleeping bag. More than 5, medical incidents were reported to officials, of which were drug-related. Despite rumors of multiple births occurring at Woodstock, no evidence can support the claim that any children were born during the festival. It took festival organizers years to pay off debts incurred during the festival.
Organizers originally sought to find a location for a recording studio, but this idea morphed into creating the music festival of the century.
Woodstock was known as a destination for artists and music lovers before the famous festival of Their theory could have some truth, since he later claimed he had to move following the festival because his house was constantly surrounded by tourists, drug addicts, and star-crazed fans.
Joni Mitchell never actually attended or performed at Woodstock. John Lennon and The Beatles refused to perform at Woodstock when their request to have Yoko Ono perform alongside them was turned down. Farmer Max Yasgur was paid a respectable sum for the use of his acre dairy farm to host the festival. Canadian band Lighthouse backed out of the festival due to concerns over safety and…ahem…toiletry space. The festival was repeatedly stopped throughout the weekend due to rain and the risk of electrocution.
Some attendees claim they waited in line for hours to use restroom facilities. Rumor has it jugs of homemade wine were passed around freely. Not exactly. Police closed at least one thruway exit east of the festival to stem the source of a blockbuster traffic jam around the site. How bad were the roads? Wade Lawrence, the director of what is now the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts at the festival site, recently confirmed the helicopter story with the medevac pilot, who said the mother gave birth at the hospital.
Yasgur told the young crowd massed on his field he was a farmer not used to speaking to groups. Self-deprecation aside, he ran a large dairy operation with a large herd, trucks and its own plant.
There was undisputedly music at Woodstock, and many attendees reportedly spent the weekend blissed out. But Woodstock lasted more than three days.
